On the Sensitivity of Web Proxy Cache Performance to Workload Characteristics

چکیده
This paper describes the design and use of a synthetic Web proxy workload generator (ProWGen) to investigate the sensitivity of proxy cache replacement policies to selected Web workload characteristics. Tracedriven simulations with synthetic workloads from ProWGen show the relative sensitivity of three popular cache replacement algorithms – LRU, LFUAging, and GD-Size – to Zipf slope, temporal locality, and correlation (if any) between file size and popularity, and the relative insensitivity of these algorithms to one-timers and heavy tail index. Performance differences between the three policies are also highlighted.

The response speed of Web pages is one of the necessities of information technology. In recent years, renowned companies such as Google and computer scientists focused on speeding up the web. Achievements such as Google Pagespeed, Nginx and varnish are the result of these researches. In Customer to Customer(C2C) business systems, such as chat systems, and in Business to Customer(B2C) systems, s...
متن کاملProWGen: a synthetic workload generation tool for simulation evaluation of web proxy caches
This paper describes the design and use of a synthetic Web proxy workload generator called ProWGen to investigate the sensitivity of Web proxy cache replacement policies to five selected Web workload characteristics. Three representative cache replacement policies are considered in the simulation study: a recency-based policy called Least-Recently-Used (LRU), a frequency-based policy called Lea...
متن کاملWorkload Requirements for a Very High-Capacity Proxy Cache Design
Previous studies measuring the performance of web proxy caches have identified the persistent storage system as a principal bottleneck of performance and scalability. Many researchers have advocated the use of multiple spindles as well as file system enhancements to overcome this bottleneck, but commercial proxy caches continue to suffer from bottlenecks in the persistent store. This paper sugg...
متن کاملOn the Performance of Heterogeneous Web Proxy Caching Hierarchies
This paper uses trace-driven simulations to evaluate the performance of three different cache management techniques for multi-level Web caching hierarchies. In particular, the experiments consider heterogeneous cache replacement policies, size-based partitioning, and sharingbased partitioning across the levels of a two-level caching hierarchy. Three different synthetic Web proxy workloads are u...
